Take a journey through the history of Dunedin, following its progress from the earliest communities to the modern city, at Toitu Otago Settlers Museum. The oldest history museum in New Zealand, it houses extensive collections of items that depict everything from the area's Maori culture and history to the inventions of the information era that changed everyday life in the city. The exhibits of arms, uniforms, and other items display the impact that global events such as World War I had on the area. A gallery proudly showcases the works of local artists who helped establish Dunedin as one of New Zealand's main cultural hubs. Admission to the museum is free and guided tours are available once a day at an additional cost. Plan my Dunedin trip by asking Inpirock to come up with tips and suggestions.

  • One needs to stroll around at a slow pace to try and take in amazing old items, then go around again to take it all in. Remember the old cars and gear our oldies once used? Some really interesting...  more »
  • This is by far one of the best museums I have ever seen. Its incredible that its free! It has a beautiful spacious layout where you walk through a timeline of Dunedins past origins to Dunedin today...  more »

  • Great place to visit and catch up on the local history. So many great NZ companies founded in the area that no longer exist, very sad. But at least their heritage is being preserved for others to learn about.
  • Very nice museum with something for everyone. I specially liked the automotive department. One small criticism: the first part is too dark. If you're above 50 you will need a flashlight to see or read anything.
