Commissioned by early 20th century resident David Theomin, the luxurious house boasts 35 rooms, electrical appliances and other features cutting-edge in their time--plus a rich Jacobean-style exterior decorated with stone and tiles. Inside you'll find an array of opulent furnishings, grand halls, and interior balconies. Join a guided tour, held six times daily, to learn more about the house, its gardens, and its residents. Consider making your reservations ahead of time, as the tours set limits on the number of participants. Olveston is a 'not to be missed' place to visit in Dunedin. It's a marvellous house complete with many original fittings, furniture and furnishings. Our guide was sooo good and told us many... more »
A really lovely house preserved in it's original state from when the family moved in. The family story and all the artifacts from around the world provide so many anecdotes and so much to look at. The house itself is quite lovely and so well designed with many new inventions which put it ahead of its time. It was a pleasure to visit.
A great collection depicting wealthy living from 100 years ago. The house is visited by conducted tour only. We were rushed around and sped from room to room with no time to take it in. 40 minutes to see the house is not enough. If, like me, you were raised visiting National trust houses in the UK, then like me you may be a little disappointed. But this is a great collection of 'stuff' if only we had been given the time to take it in. Our guide although knowledgeable was so quietly spoken and with a local accent speaking very quickly, we the older generation with our hearing not as good these days, found we could not hear much of what she was telling us.
