Gannet Colony, Clifton

4.9
#5 of 45 in Parks in Hawke's Bay Region
Wildlife Area · Hidden Gem · Nature / Park
Witness the annual en masse nesting and the amusing antics of Gannet Colony. About 1,200 pairs of gannets, large white seabirds, nest here each year, and hundreds of these little homes are built just centimeters apart. Later in the season you can see the hatchlings and watch as they learn to fly. Observe all this from a viewing platform above the nesting area, and enjoy views of Muriwai Beach. Choose between walking and riding a tractor down the long beach to the attraction. Make Gannet Colony a centerpiece of your Clifton vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Clifton trip planner.

  • The beach tractor trip is the BEST way to see the Gannets, because the drivers show you all the geology, take you back in time and make the trip come alive. I've done it at least 4 times now, never tire of it.
  • Loved it. Overland safari very interesting. Get up close to the birds plus magnificent views.
