In the early 1990’s four vineyards in Felton Road decided to combine their efforts to make and market their wine. These vineyards were Molyneux, Manson’s Farm, Verboeket Estate and Full Circle, though none had previously released wine to the market under these names. The owners of the vineyards referred to themselves as the Gang of Four, and a gentleman’s handshake brought them together to become Mt Difficulty Wines.

At the end of 1999 the release of the first wines under the name of Mt Difficulty necessitated the formation of a company, Mt Difficulty Wines Ltd, and most of the individual vineyards passed into the ownership of the company. The owners became shareholders, and to this day the original Gang of Four retains a majority shareholding.

Late in 2000 the current Mt Difficulty winery in Felton Road was commissioned. Designed primarily by Matt Dicey it was completed just before Christmas and included an on-site Cellar Door. As the Mt Difficulty brand became more well known the small Cellar Door outgrew its premises in the winery, and a new architecturally designed building was built high above the winery on Templars Hill. Today the Cellar Door and Restaurant at Mt Difficulty Wines showcase the Mt Difficulty brand to thousands of New Zealand and international visitors annually.

  • Lunch last minute at Mt Difficulty, we phoned as we left Queenstown and were greeted warmly by Kim. A table for 2 and the most amazing view. Our meals were delicious, steak accompanied by the Ghost....  more »
  • Enjoyed the wine tasting and fabulous views. Great service...only a little disappointed at the cheese board which is quite basic.  more »

  • Top spot for lunch with spectacular views. Good sharing plate options such as cheeses and antipasto. Once you have ordered food you do a free wine tasting in the cellar to find what you will have for lunch. Service was attentive
  • Definitely one of the best views from a winery in the region overlooking the many vineyards in Bannockburn as well as Kawarau Gorge. The restaurant and cellar door are both great places to sit an enjoy the view. There's a great selection of wines, tasting experiences/trays, food platters and mains. All served by very friendly and knowledgeable staff. This place was beautiful in the winter so I can't imagine how it would look in the summer/autumn.
