Protruding from a rocky background overlooking the bay, The Goerke House was originally built for a German lieutenant and a manager of a diamond company. The architect Otto Ertl designed the house in 1909 merging elements of jugendstil (German version of art nouveau) with African themes. Notice the welcoming inscriptions on the wooden front door and the wall of the entrance hall. As you climb the wooden staircase, you will come across an impressive stained-glass window depicting pink flamingos. Although the original furnishings are mostly gone, the house has been carefully restored and the display of old photos keeps the memory of the house as it once was.
