#2 of 20 in Parks in Guanajuato
Nature / Park · Wildlife Area
See the indigenous archaeological site of Canada de la Virgen, an ancient temple complex belonging to the native Otomi people. Discovered in 1998 on private property, the site has only recently opened to the public. Take a guided tour of the complex to learn about the history of the ethnic group that inhabited these parts for thousands of years, and to acquaint yourself with their culture and traditions. View the ruins of the pyramids, thought to be ceremonial burial grounds, and climb the sloped structures for good views of the surroundings. • Took the tour with Albert coffee. He is very knowledgeable of the site and history of the area. The site itself is amazing. Very secluded, so prepare for a little hike. But this is a positive as it is not commercialized whatsoever. My teens enjoyed every minute of it, but especially getting to the top of the pyramid. we will probably go back in a few years as they are still discovering new findings. Highly recommend.
  • A bit out of the way from Léon, but along the way if you are visiting San Miguel de Allende, Cañada de la Virgen, posits itself as scenic day trip and hiking location as it over looks the wind swept mountains and arid shrubbery of the nearby geography. Be aware the only way to reach the pyramids is by the buses that depart periodically and can only fit so many people; be sure to arrive early to secure bus tickets or you may find none left. A short 2-3 kilometer hike follows from the spot the bus drops you off to reach the pyramids. Nevertheless, the photographs and memories are well worth the effort.
