Parroquia San Jose, San Jose del Cabo

#2 of 13 in Historic Sites in Baja California Sur
Church · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
Visit Parroquia San Jose, an attractive and storied place of worship in the historical center of town. The first incarnation of the church was founded in 1734 by Jesuitical Friar Nicolas Tamaral. Destroyed and damaged during various altercations and natural disasters over the centuries, the church first stood as it appears today in 1840--though again, in 1918, a hurricane caused significant damage to the site. Rebuilt midway into the 20th century, the church today stands as a symbol of the town and witness to local history, with events of great significance linked with the life of the building. Snap pictures of its simple, graceful facade, and note the mosaic depicting the killing of Friar Tamaral during an uprising by the local indigenous population. • Great quick mass with very relevant points brought up by the priest. If you are not religious, it has a san jose sign at the front which is a must for taking photos with the family.  more »
  • People are spaced out (2 per pew), pews outside are available, all the fans are on and the doors wide open for cross-breeze. Hand sanitizer when u enter, and temp check. Mass time was 7pm on Sunday!  more »
  • Parroquia San José is very simple church. It's got some history. you won't find a Roman cathedral here but this little place is obviously important to the locals that so come check it out.
  • Interesting and iconic site to visit while exploring San Jose del Cabo. The church sits on the plaza in downtown San Jose del Cabo. This is an active church, so please enter respectfully and ensure you don’t interrupt any services or activities. If you’re a religion, history, and/or picture buff, you’ll love this small, charming mission-style house of worship. Take a moment to appreciate the building and the history as an important part of your understanding of San Jose del Cabo. Recommended.
