If you find yourself in the small town of Bacalar, stop by and admire Fuerte de San Felipe. The stone fortress dates from 1733, when it was constructed to protect the city from pirates and English colonizers. View the restored stone walls and old cannons of the fort, built in the shape of a four-pointed star. Visit the small museum inside, with informative plaques in English and Spanish, and learn about the history of the structure.   • It was great visiting the inside of the fort. We had taken pictures of the outside but decided to pay the entrance fee. There is a small museum inside which provides the history of the area and why...  more »

  • I was so happy to finally come here. I had an awesome time learning about the fort and the pirates. It’s a small place so you take 20 min or so. The view is amazing!
  • The paintings in the shop (especially the ones upstairs) were really good. The historical information about pirates and the aboriginals written on the walls were very interesting. Definitely worth visiting once. It’s also near the lake so you can walk from there to the beaches.
