Trou aux Cerfs, Mauritius

#3 of 19 in Historic Sites in Mauritius
Visit Trou aux Cerfs to see the crater of the dormant volcano and views across the island. Standing 605 m (1,985 ft) above sea level, the volcano enjoys a thick covering of vegetation, offering good routes for nature walks. The view from the top affords an extensive panorama of the island from an atmospheric vantage point. The plants growing in the crater make it an interesting natural sight on an island that owes so much of its scenery to volcanic activity. Note that access to the crater itself is along a dangerously steep embankment, so you should not attempt to descend into it. • If you aren't expecting much, you wont be disappointed. It is a crater. A hole in the ground. Surrounded by greenery, which is in abundance elsewhere as well. The kids weren't impressed  more »
  • Were over the second time here, and this time we could go once around, weather station blue on the new. Nice one here relaxed that, without cars can make his round, with a few sports equipment, which unfortunately once again should be overhauled. The crater is rather beside the point. Suitable for wheelchairs and strollers. Toilet must be paid here, 10 rupee

  • This is a volcanic crater with a lake in the middle. The road has been built right till the top, so one can directly drive to the crater and enjoy the scenary from the mountain top. Couple of best things to enjoy here are the scenic views of the surroundings and the cool breeze/wind at the top. Majority of the crater is filled with trees but the lake in the middle is good to look at.
  • Amazing place..... This massive attraction in the heart of Mauritius measures ( curepipe ) more than 980 feet in diameter and some 260 feet deep. Known for its humid climate and expansive 360-degree views,. Trou aux Cerfs Crater is a favorite spot among travelers seeking out natural beauty and quiet tranquility. While this dormant volcano hasn’t erupted in lifetimes, experts say it’s primed to blow any time in the next thousand years—a fact that lends a bit of edge to an otherwise peaceful excursion. I heard that, Trou Aux Cerfs is a german word which means (Hole of the deer.) The last eruption took place around the year 1200 and one can find many oak trees in and around the place.  Just walkable distance from curepipe,
