The Photographic Museum, Port Louis

4.2
#10 of 18 in Museums in Mauritius
Found in the heart of the capital, The Photographic Museum features a treasure trove of old cameras, lenses, and vintage prints. The collection includes a number of daguerreotypes, the precursor to photography as we know it today, that date back to the mid-19th century. The museum is large, but it holds a lot of intrigue, especially for those interested in the history of photography and the island itself; survey the display of photos from the island’s history for an invaluable insight into the historical makeup of Mauritius. • A first visit in 2017 with my 2 children (9 and 12 years), under the impetus of my eldest son then interested in "old photography" ... We were not disappointed. We were greeted by Mr. Tristan Bréville himself, director and founder of the museum, and his wife Marie-Noelle, both with a great passion for photography, and especially by the culture and history of Mauritius. Mr. Bréville was able, through his words and presents, to inspire my son who since then has become not only an avid collector (Pathé Baby projectors, antique cameras, etc.) but also a passionate photography (film!) and cinema (in starting with the super 8 format). We returned this summer (2019) and visited the museum again, especially in the hope of meeting Mr. Bréville again;-) And, again, we were not disappointed! Madame and Monsieur Bréville are extraordinary and kind people. My son, at the age of 14, was able to share this passion for a few precious moments with Mr. Bréville and we were able to rediscover the museum, its many antique cameras, rare and beautiful photos, the collection of old postcards, discuss Maurice's history and the importance of preserving its heritage, etc. A second beautiful meeting, brief, the time of a visit, but of those from which you leave with stars full of eyes ... I can only recommend you to visit this museum, a place full of history that is worth a visit, if only to meet the Bréville family: Maurice can be proud to count among its fellow citizens people of this calibre. THANK YOU again Madame and Monsieur Bréville! PS: Mr. Bréville is also the author of several books not to be missed, including "Birth and Greatness of a Port", a book on the history of Port Louis rich in photos, images and information, a real treasure!
