International Slave Route Monument, Le Morne

#7 of 10 in Parks in Riviere Noire District
Monument · Hidden Gem · Garden
International Slave Route Monument, while small in size, holds huge significance as a reminder of the price of freedom and the suffering endured by so many during years of this active slave route. Built on February 1, 2009 to commemorate the 174th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in Mauritius, the monument informs visitors of the role this small island played in the slave trade as a major stopover. One larger sculpture forms the center, surrounded by others symbolizing the various countries from which the slaves arrived or where they ended after transiting through the island. The structure stands at the foot of Le Morne Mountain and is a quick but worthwhile stop on your way to nearby beaches or a trip up the mountain. • An interesting little site next to Le Morne but there is no information about why it was sighted there. You'll need to Google that. It's apparently where escaped slave hid. There is a nice public beach across the road from it and a reasonable restaurant.
  • Why don't they give you more information and make this place nicer. Every time I've been there it's been closed . I am just wondering, if they were not black would this place be more accessible and done much better.
