Fort Rinella, Kalkara

4.7
#5 of 60 in Museums in Malta
Step back in time and see one of the fiercest weapons of the Victorian era at Fort Rinella. Completed in 1886, the fort was intended to protect British interests in the Mediterranean and safeguard shipping routes through the Suez Canal to India. Relatively small, the fort still packed a punch thanks to its 100-ton Armstrong gun, the largest muzzle-loading piece of artillery ever made. To give visitors a sense of the Empire era, volunteers of the Malta Heritage Trust offer guided tours and stage reenactments of life in the 19th century British army. You can also watch swordsmanship displays, cavalry shows, and artillery firing. Check the schedule of events online. • Wonderful place. The people there are doing what they're doing with heart. You can shoot blanks in a Martini Henry, too, but the whole place is just an amazing experience. Tour guides are wonderfully sympathetic and entertaining. Wish I could personally drag every friend I have there. Thank you so much!
  • Our visit was highly enriched by the staff that manages the site. It's only a few employees and they worked very hard and professionally in order to make the visit enjoyable and valuable. Dressed in military uniforms, like real soldiers of the fort, they not only guided us on our visit, but made special shows and demonstrations of weapons (like rifles, bayonets and swords). They entertained and interacted a lot with the visitors, allowing also visitors to try the weapons. We were planning a short visit, but instead spent and enjoyed more than 3 hours, learning a lot about the fort, its huge cannon and how soldiers lived and worked. Highly recommended
