Clearwater / Wind Show Caves, Gunung Mulu National Park

#2 of 9 in Things to do in Gunung Mulu National Park
Famous for its intricate network of impressive stalactites, stalagmites, and rock corals, Clearwater / Wind Show Caves represents reportedly the longest cave system in the world, featuring a subterranean river. The caves can be reached on foot via a 4 km (2.5 mi) nature trail or as part of a sailing trip down the Melinau River. Touring the caves involves quite a bit of walking on forest trails, over wooden planks, and floating bridges, as well as climbing down a series of rocky steps. Pay attention to the illuminated chamber known as "King's Room." Finish your tour with a refreshing dip at a clear pool near the picnic area, where you can go swarming with bright-green butterflies. • The visit has to be 1/2 days with picnic type lunch (the hotel or the guide treats). The departure of Mulu Marriot is by boat that, only per se, is already, in a river surrounded by tropical vegetation and typical villages, of great beauty. I did the usual route, departure by boat, visit to a village with a handicraft market and continue along the river passing through the Wind Cave, this cave, compared to Deer Cave and Clearwater, there is nothing special, it is basically a place where (not always) feels the wind Spend. It follows to the wonderful Clearwater cave. The boat to the stunning Emerald Lagoon of super crystalline and refreshing waters where it is possible to bathe and usually does on the return because it knows frankly better. As in Deer Cave, a whole good structure assembled including bathrooms. It is a well ingreme climb (stairs) by the cliff to the grotto being that all the way is paved and without dangers. The cave makes us feel minimal, the size of insects. The high point of this grotto is its inner river that leaves us all booked. The visit to Clearwater Cave is physically more demanding than the Deer cave but it's worth all the effort and the guides let us rest as long as it takes. There is no smell of ammonia in the grotto nor does it have the sensation of claustrophobia due to its immensity. The lunch area is like a porch on the lagoon with great conditions, tables and benches with bathrooms. Although there are other people doing exactly the same route, there is no cluster and we feel the locals as almost just for us.

  • The river just next to the entrance of clearwater cave is clear, emerald green and cool. Highly recommended after a sweaty trek in hot humid weather. The cool water refreshes and relieves all the ache...  more »
