Hill of Crosses - Kryziu Kalnas, Siauliai

#1 of 17 in Things to do in Siauliai
Packed with effigies and memorials thought to have begun after an uprising against the Russian Empire, Hill of Crosses - Kryziu Kalnas plays home to nearly 100,000 crosses and represents one of Lithuania's most well-known sights. Bulldozed several times by Soviet authorities during their rule over the country, the hill has come back to life in the decades since Lithuania's independence. Visit the hill and wander the wooden pathways winding around the mound and you'll be surrounded by crucifixes of all sizes and styles. Don't miss taking an up-close look at the thousands of types of crosses carpeting the area; often larger ones are covered in hundreds of smaller examples attached with strings, rope, and rosaries. Feel free to add one of your own if you'd like to contribute to the hill's growth. Put Hill of Crosses - Kryziu Kalnas at the forefront of your travel plans using our Siauliai visit planner .

  • It is said that it was built in the memorial service of the people who were uprising and assassinated against the Russian occupation of Lithuania. I'm surprised at this number. A cross is set up throughout the mountain. In the center is a walkway made of such a tree. On both sides of it, there are so many crosses, statues of Jesus, and rosary. This is impressive, isn't it? Isn't it a must-see here that such a world is in the Baltic country? Personally, I think there are so many crosses here that I can't count. Well, I visited without expecting it, but I was overwhelmed.

  • Overall interesting. But no more than that. Were there at 11am and drizzled. Tourists from Asia actively photographed and shot videos of almost every cross. We walked for half an hour and drove on. Prices for souvenirs and crosses, which can be left there, are democratic. 2 euro cross, 2 euros magnet, etc. Sellers in stalls speak 3 languages accurately (Lithuanian, English, Russian). The only thing that surprised - paid parking and toilet. If you're passing through, there's something to see. (We advise you to read the history of this place, so there are a lot of questions along the way).

  • Very impressive religious place to visit. Cheap and spacious parking. Good gift shops. Very affordable prices. We bought a 1m tall cross only cost 6 euro. Not crowded. Beautiful view.
  • Interesting background. Bit of a walk so wear comfortable shoes. But overall, a nice relaxing place when not busy.
