At Latvian War Museum learn about the political and military history of the country. Told through photographs and awards, the story of Latvia also unfolds through displays of weapons and objects that once belonged to the military. In addition to outlining the country's experience through two world wars, the museum provides exhibits from medieval times to the modern day. View uniforms and helmets used in battle or size up grenades of different powers and dimensions. Dioramas depict historic moments and give insight into the war experience. Tour the museum on your own or request a self-guided tour via your phone or the website. See Latvian War Museum and all Riga has to offer by arranging your trip with our Riga trip planner.

more »
It's a free-for-all museum, but it's more attentive than some of the collection. The museum has free-to-use tablets and the cheapest pieces of credit in the city. There are 4 sections of the museum, there are many exhibitions, the collection is very large and treasured. The museum is also located in the centre of events and is very convenient to walk to the city. If you're interested in pulling the scene, it's very important to be here.View original

Great that a museum like this is free, there is many floors to explore with a lot of information, with English provided either on displays or in a handout on way into each exhibition. I’ve only given it three stars though as it doesn’t seem to flow that well, we weren’t told to start on a particular floor or area, and often weren’t sure what time period we were in, especially hard if you were searching for the English translation! Could do with perhaps an audio guide for an optional fee, or perhaps best experienced with a guide.

An excellent exhibition that charts the turbulent history of Latvia’s striving towards independence during and after WW1, hemmed in by the Germans and Bolsheviks. Lots of first-hand material from letters and photos really brings it alive, and helps clarify the often complex and shifting post-WW1 politics. A must!
