Dating back to the Neolithic period, The Citadel shows archaeological evidence of use and occupation by numerous fallen empires. Roman, Byzantine, and Umayyad ruins dot the site, located in the middle of downtown Amman. Highlights include a temple to Hercules, with remains of a massive statue of the god and a domed Umayyad palace. Visit the museum on premises to learn more about the site's history, and take photos to your heart's content among the varied and imposing ruins. The Citadel Reviews
Just amazing! Well worth the walk up the million steps that we took from the bottom down town. There's an indoor part to the museum with lots of local artefacts. Stunning architecture. more »

From the Citadel, there is an interesting view of Jordan's capital: you can see a noble area and a poor area that is home to Syrian refugees. It's worth knowing!!
This is a must-do attraction here in Amman. It’s in a easy to spot location and the views of the city are spectacular. I hear it’s nice to come for sunset but I came here mid morning after breakfast and it was still a stunning view. If you like history, the Citadel will be a great visual. Roman ruins in the Middle East are quite rare so it’s nice to be able to enjoy them. Bring a hat, sunglasses and something to cover your arms because it is very sunny with no cover. Wear lots of sunscreen! There’s a little cafe in the front where you can buy coffee, tea and soda. Some snacks. We brought our own bananas, and dates for energy because the sun will exhaust you. A beautiful historical experience overall!
Well worth a visit. Great views of the city with lots of varied, interesting ruins. Small museum also surprisingly packed with interesting and note worthy exhibits. Good loos too.
