  • Take the ropeway to Tenjindaira Station, and then use the Tenjin Pass Lift to get up and you'll find an altitude of 1500m! From there, you can walk to the top of Mt. Tanigawa. From here, it is a severe mountain road in sneakers. It took about an hour to reach the Kumaanazawa shelter cabin, but on the way, chains and log stairs were installed on a severe mountain path like climbing rocks. I've turned back to here to be able to go easy. It's up to you to take it easy.

  • Inokurasawa on the Gunma side of Mt. Tanigawa is one of the three largest rocks in Japan. Just walk on the paved road from Tsuchiai Station. The scenery is of course the best. This is a package picture of water from JR East.

  • A very picturesque spot when the weather is good. The standard route is probably more difficult than climbing Mt. Fuji and at least two other routes to the top are for professional/senior level climbers. Be very careful on the slippery boards and there will be traffic jams at some points on the route, so start early. It took me 5 hours to complete the trek from the Tenjindaira cable car station. The panoramic scenery near the two peaks of the mountain is stunning and is worth the ascent. If you want to avoid the crowds, start a bit late (around 10AM) and the descent will not be too crowded around 1530 because most people descend before 1500. However, make sure not to miss the last cable car at 1700.
  • Day trip from Tokyo. Depart train station Doai, walk up to Tanigawa and down to train station Tsuchitaru. Beautiful daytrip if you are fairly fit. The second half of the trail is really beautiful (lots of wild flowers) as most people take the cable care from Doai up and down. I was totally alone on the second half. If I did it all again I might reverse and start with the beautiful part and then take the cable car down at Doai. You should get hold of the topographical map. Only in Japanese, but if you can read a map you are safe. Without may you might take the wrong turn. You won't die because there are shelters along the way, but some of them are really not bigger than a tent. Obviously I did this walk in the summer.
