Usajingu Shrine, Usa

#1 of 191 in Historic Sites in Oita Prefecture
Must see · Religious Site · Historic Site
See one of the most famous and sacred Shinto shrines at Usajingu Shrine, dedicated to warrior god Hachiman-jin, a deification of Emperor Ojin. The present complex dates from the 19th century, although the foundation originated in the 8th century. Broad walkways, temple buildings, ponds connected with small bridges, and stairs lead to the top of the hill and the main hall. The two portions of the red and white shrine, placed one in front of the other, characterize the structure's Hachiman-zukuri style. The deity stays in the front of the shrine during day, while the back serves as its sleeping chamber. Stop in the tourist shops on the lower level for souvenirs.
