After tracing a bewitching path through bamboo groves, you'll find the mysterious looking Adashino Nenbutsu-ji Temple nestled on the wooded hilltop. The Buddhist temple was established in 811 CE, and became a place where the lonely dead who had no kin would be interred. In this evocative temple you can observe around 8,000 stone effigies, filling almost every empty spot around the modest pagoda and other structures. If you're here around the 23rd and 24th of August, don't miss the annual ceremony of remembrance, during which thousands of candles fill the area, adding to the temple's mystique. Adashino Nenbutsu-ji Temple Reviews
古来葬送の地であった化野にある、浄土宗のお寺。境内には八千体を数える石仏石塔が並んでいて、それらは往古化野一体に葬られた人々のお墓です。無常を感じるお寺です。静かにおまいりしたい場所です。 more »This temple of the Jodo sect is located in Kano, which has been the place of funerals since ancient times. In the precincts, there are stone buddha towers that count 8,000 bodies, and they are the graves of people buried in the ancient fields. It is a temple that feels the insatiation. It is a place where you want to be quiet.
more »The bamboo path was well maintained, but the distance was short and disappointing. I think that it is good as a photograph spot, but the distance is not enough by walking in the bamboo forest. In addition, it was a temple that did not leave an impression overall, including the Stone Buddha group (the riverside of Saiin).
I suggest this place for those highly interested in Buddhism and history. It is a small park inside but very peaceful. Located inside is also a graveyard with headstones. You can see locals coming to pay respect. The stone statues inside each represents a soul without kin to see them off to afterlife. There’s an entrance fee 500yen.
I went here in autumn and it was beautiful. Very quiet and serene. Go early to get the entire place to yourself.
