Part of a World Heritage Site and one of the oldest shrines in the country, Ujigami Shrine dates back to 1060. The shrine was supposedly built to honor Uji no Wakiiratsuko, a prince who committed suicide to settle a dispute of the imperial succession. Its nagare-zukuri architectural style features a curved, asymmetrical roof extending above the main entrance to provide shelter for worshippers. Look out for the basin fed by a famous spring, whose water is used for tea ceremonies and is said to have special properties. Ujigami Shrine reviews
This is a place where cultural heritage is more than tourist attraction. The place is relatively small compare to all other attractions near by or in Kyoto area. You can finish this place within 5 min. Therefore do not expect great views or austonishing experience, if you are not so into the cultural experience. On the other hand this place is very traditional and is not commercialized as other attractions. You can experience the most authentic essence of Japanese culture here.
The oldest shrine in Japan! Nice and quiet!
