上野東照宮 Toshogu Shrine, Uenokoen

Step back into the early 17th century and witness Japan’s cultural history at 上野東照宮 Toshogu Shrine. Part of the Shrines and Temples of Nikko UNESCO World Heritage Site, the temple consists of a dozen buildings including a restored, five-story, 17th-century pagoda, as well as the tomb of Leyasu, founder of Japan’s first shogunate. Buildings feature vibrantly colored decorations as well as an abundance of carvings, including that of three wise monkeys who see, hear, and speak no evil. • This is a Toshogu, which is dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of Edo shogunate. Although this one is not so famous as a Toshogu in Nikko, the beauty of the main building deserves attention...  more »
  • Well worth a visit even though there wasn’t any flowers really out. It’s a quiet and peaceful place and found the whole area somewhere to just chill out and soak up Japan. A photographers dream...  more »

  • Bare, windswept, and cold when we visited on Christmas Eve. Most likely nicer on a summer day with more greenery and atmosphere, or in the late evening when the lanterns are lit. The gold leaf is worth a photo or two but you'll need to pay to enter the grounds. It's really only worth visiting if you're in the area or around Ueno pond/zoo. Has a small pagoda, some stone lanterns, and quite a few small outbuildings.
  • A big golden shrine near the Ueno park. Beautiful to watch, you can pay and get nearer the temple.
