Shitamachi Museum depicts life on the flatlands, highlighting Tokyo's working class. Learn how craftsmen, merchants, and fishermen lived and produced goods from the 17th century (Edo period) to modern times. The first floor features a life-size replica of classic old Edo street with houses and adjacent shops equipped with the original furniture. Climb to the second floor to find old photographs and authentic children's toys you can play with. Ask for an English speaking guide to show you around. We went with my 9 year old grand daughter on a terribly raining miserable day. It saved the day for us. The guide in English told us so many wonderful things about living in Japan 100 years ago and ta... more »

外国... more »
A whip-and-white museum on the banks of Ueno's Shinobi Pond. The state of the lower town of Edo, the scenery of the long house, and the time have falled, and the state of the town until the middle of the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa eras can be seen. In Asakusa, there are 12-story buildings built around the Taisho era, and there are many pictures of the magnificent Western-style buildings around it, so you get the illusion that it's a foreign country. Unfortunately, it collapsed in the Great Kanto Earthquake. On the second floor, there are old toys and you can actually play, so children are also fun. There were a lot of foreign tourists, but I was impressed that the receptionist was a guide in English.View original

Nice little museum with interactive old fashion toys and picking fortunes, sample historic clothing to try on, and model merchants' homes you can go in with authentic artifacts. There are also free tours to really get a deeper understanding and welcoming staff. Definitely recommend and good value at 300¥. Thank you!

A wonderful place to get a feel for the history of the area. Has walk in houses that allows you to really feel what life was like back in the day, all authentic and handed over from original owners. The upstairs is really amazing with the old children toys and a walk through the history of the area laid out. The staff were super inviting and friendly. Highly recommend this quant spot.
