View a natural wonder thousands of years in the making at Tottori Sand Dunes, located within a national park. These hills represent the largest sand dunes in Japan and stretch for 16 km (10 mi) in an east-to-west direction. Formed by sand washed ashore by the Sendaigawa River, the shape-shifting dunes alter their appearance every so often thanks to the influence of prevailing winds. View this attraction on foot, by riding a camel, or by hopping on a horse-drawn carriage. For something totally different, try paragliding or sandboarding in the area. Tottori Sand Dunes Reviews
more »I went on a golden week trip. It was a feeling of a big sandbox. It was a chilly day, and the sand was cold and the cold air seemed to come up from the bottom, and it was very cold. I took my sandals and changed them. There is a place where you can wash your feet just outside the Tottori Sand Dunes. Towel vending machine? There were some things like that, but I think it's better to take it with you.
We had a whole day planned at the Sand Dunes but were a little nervous because it was raining. We arrived at Rakadaya, the last stop on the bus and found out we couldn't paraglide because of the weath... more »
The most popular sand dunes in Japan. It took me about 10 minutes to climb up to the top. The views from the top was nice. Camel rides are available, but other than that, there were not that many entertainments available. It is very windy in that area. Make sure to wear warm. BBQ is available in summer. A lot of car parks available around the dunes. Some of them are free for charge, but the nearest one charges for 500 JPN. Many souvenir shops around. Not that many English available though.
Ever since I read about the sand dunes at Tottori, I’ve wanted to visit. They are stunning. Amazed at their formation and history. It’s very comfortable visiting in autumn; it’s not that hot and there’s still enough light. There are plenty of souvenir shops, but I couldn’t find good places for food; bring some of your own water and snacks.
