Developed as an important salt-panning area in the mid-17th century, the district once produced up to 17,000 tons (37.5 million pounds) of salt annually for Kyoto and Tokyo. Wooden facades, while walls, and tiny terraces take you back to the early modern times, where advanced architectural techniques helped build impressive houses for prosperous and industrious citizens. Takehara Townscape Preservation Area reviews

This can be a place to be if you want to see, smell, and taste Japanese history. The houses are well preserved. The sake winery is functional. I even drank free sake inside a sake store. A must-see... more »
Historical place which have little Kyoto name as well. Can buy 1 day ticket 600yen and visit 4 traditional house/museum. 1.松阪邸 2.歷史民俗資料館 3.光本邸 4.森川邸 other than this, rest are free. Good to visit around.
Nickname Little Kyoto but without the crowd. Nice quiet walk in the short district of old traditional Japanese houses and try some sake at the brewery. Cannot be compare to Higashiyama in terms of shops and trendiness but more traditional IMO.
