  • Excellent little zoo with lots of different animals packed in a small area. Good for kids to see the pandas and polar bears which you don't see many places. Not sure about the size of some of the pens...  more »
  • On the right hand side of the zoo is the cat bear, which can see the cat eating bamboo through the glass window. After watching the cat bears continue to participate in other animals, the history of the zoo is very educational.

  • A must do if you're in Tokyo. The entrance fee is cheap, it's easy to navigate, and the staff are very friendly. The animals seem to be happy where they are, and the entire zoo is really beautiful. The cafeteria food was decent, and there are many vending machines placed around the zoo for your convenience. It's just a short walk from Ueno station, and was maybe only ten minutes from the Centurion Hotel & Spa, which was the hotel I stayed at. Don't miss out!
  • Very very cool little zoo. If you go in the main entrance you will come on to the Pandas first. They have a lot of different types for Monkeys. Its very cool to watch the monkeys run around on their swings. Some of the animals have two different areas to hang out in. Like the Polar bear. He can be in a grassy area or in the water area. You can take a tram over to the other side of the zoo and there are many many different animals to visit with.
  • The habitats are way too small for most animals and are most are almost completely devoid of anything to stimulate the animals. Several elephants are in a a small concrete area with nothing more around than a concrete pond - not suitable for such intelligent creatures. The panda area is small and I expected something better for them considering they're the zoos star attraction. Gorilla habitat looks overcrowded as well. A large number of animals such as the hippos and zebras are kept in very small pens and sit and stare into the corner of their pens, as far as they can get from the people looking at them - they are obviously uncomfortable with the amount of space they have and the lack of any ability to conceal themselves. I don't see how anybody can go here and feel good about what they see.
  • Great zoo to bring your kids. Make sure you have a lot of time because you can spend countless hours here! Lots and lots of animals so make sure you pick up a map and plan the route you want to walk. Bring your own food if you want because they do have places to sit even i bad weather.
  • This place is a must-see destination when you visit Tokyo, especially if you have a big heart for cute pandas. It's family-friendly and expect to do a lot of walking, but it's very enjoyable with every animal you'll see. Remember to check their souvenir shop where they have adorable stuffed pandas!

Where to stay in Tokyo

Tokyo abounds with excellent places to stay, from luxury affairs to humble budget-friendly lodgings. Its glittering skyscrapers house numerous international four- and five-star hotels, both in the populous cultural hotspots of Shinjuku and in the business centers of Akasaka and Shinbashi. Meanwhile, hostels catering to the shoestring traveler lie scattered throughout the city. For a memorable, distinctly Japanese experience, seek out a ryokan, a traditional bed and breakfast with tatami floor mats and sliding screen doors.
