Asakusa Shrine, Taito

4.3
#6 of 1,745 in Historic Sites in Tokyo
Unlike most buildings in the area, Asakusa Shrine survived the Tokyo air raids in 1945 and remained one of the most popular Shinto shrines in the city. Built in 1649, the temple features the gongen-zukuri architectural style, in which the worship hall and the main sanctuary form a shape resembling the letter H. The temple, also called the "Shrine of the Three Gods," was designated an Important Cultural Property in 1951 due to its historic and cultural importance. • Absolutely beautiful, mesmerizing, and crowded!! The shops that line both sides of the street provide so many treats and items to purchase. It opens around 10am and it is definitely packed! However, if you arrive very early (before the shops open - maybe around 6-7am) you'll be able to get a picture with no one in sight. Definitely try the daifuku - the vanilla custard one with a strawberry on top; we actually came back a day or so later and grabbed another one!!
  • This is a must see if you are in Tokyo. You can access the Asakusa Shrine by metro. Once there, you can imagine what ancient Tokyo looks like. Well preserved, a hidden treasure within a busy city. Try going during the morning on weekdays as weekends will be pack with tourists. Many people go there to pray. As you walk around the area, there are many places to take memorable pictures.
