#4 of 10 in Parks in Shirahama-cho
See the handiwork of the Pacific Ocean during an exploration of Sandambeki Rock Cliff, a coastal stretch featuring attractive and impressive rock formations. Take in the sight of the ocean battering the 50 m (164 ft) tall cliff, eroded into tiers that appear both rugged and ordered. Head down the elevator to explore a cave said to have been a secret hiding place for the Kumano-suigun navy during the late Heian period (794-1185 CE), and take the time to scrabble around on the rocks to the north of the cliff, snapping photos of the interesting formations. Make Sandambeki Rock Cliff a centerpiece of your Shirahama-cho vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Shirahama-cho journey planner.

  • The contrast between the color of the sea and the brown of the cliff stuanks was beautiful. From Shirahama Station, you can easily get there by local bus (Meiko bus) through Shirahama. It is free if you just look at the three-stage wall and walk around, but it costs 1300 yen for an elevator to enter the cave and see the waves and caves. I thought that it was worth it only when entering the cave as well as the view of the cliff above.

  • The three-stage wall was on the south shoreline of Nanki-Shirahama Airport. If you walk a little from the parking lot, you will find an observatory nest, where you can see a panoramic view of the three-stage wall. A cliff with a height of tens of meters of columnar joints continues for about 2km. There is also a cave just below the observatory that was used as a hidden place for the Kumano Water Army's boats.

  • Three very steep cliffs with a history of intrigue and pirates. Take a 36m lift down into sea caves to see a small but impressive shrine and learn about the local history and geological makeup of the area.
  • Must-go to the cave by elevator, ticket 1300 yen. You can see the power of wave downstairs.
