Kumano Hayatama Taisha, Shingu

4.2
Kumano Hayatama Taisha has been a sacred spot since at least the 12th century, harboring artifacts that date back to at least the third century. Many features dotted around the site point to its origins as a center of nature worship. You'll see the revered tree that has stood on the grounds for at least 800 years. Look out for the giant rock Gotobiki-iwa, which rests half way up Gongen mountain and is said to have been the site where three Shinto deities descended from the heavens. If you're visiting around the 6th of February, don't miss the notable fire festival that takes place here, in which participants race down the mountain carrying flaming torches. For travelers who use our online itinerary creator, Shingu holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Kumano Hayatama Taisha and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • On this morning, after we left Yunamine Onsen, which is said to be the oldest hot spring in Japan, we went to Kumano Hayatama Taisha following Kumano Hongu Taisha and Kumano Nachi Taisha. Hongu Taisha is a long stone step up, and Nachi Taisha is built along the steep slope of Nachi mountain, while the hayatama taisha is in a flat place in the city of Shingu City. There was a parking lot next to the company, and access to the shrine was easy enough to make it easy. The shrine of Hayatama Shrine seems to have been rebuilt after the war, and it was bright with new, red pillars and pure white walls. In the precincts, there was a cedar tree, which is a god tree. This 1,000-year-old tree seems to be a symbol of kumano faith.

  • I stayed at a nearby hotel, so I was able to visit early in the morning. In the quiet and solemn air, we were able to make a good prayer. I think that it was also meaningful that the couple was able to visit the tree of the nagi of the god tree.

  • An amazing Shrine (jinja) I definitely recommend visiting it. The air is fresh and the shrine absolutely beautiful. I recommend going in the fall.
  • Stunning scenery. A lovely if steep walk to the summit.
