Higashi Hongan-ji Temple, Shimogyo

4.2
Visit the headquarters of a Buddhist sect at Higashi Hongan-ji Temple, a temple bearing the same name as the sect. Established in 1602 by Shogun Tokugawa leyasu when splitting the existing Shin sect in two, the center of Higashi Honganji sits just a few streets to the east of Nishi Honganji, the headquarters of the other faction created after the Shogun's interference. Stroll through the temple's traditional Japanese garden and admire the large wooden structure of the main temple hall, rebuilt in 1895 after a fire burned down the original temple. • We visited this temple twice during our stay. On both occasions we were so impressed with the whole area. The carvings were so intricate when looking closer. The grounds were really lovely too. A must...  more »
  • Stunning wooden temple in a large enclosure open to the public with a small shop. Very pleasant place of prayer

  • Beautiful and grand temple from the inside and out- this temple also still operates with service throughout the day and is very welcoming. We did not run into many tourists visiting this place though it is near Kyoto station. There wasn't much to do but what do you expect, it's a temple lol. But, we enjoyed our serene walk and the peace of the temple. Come check it out. You can't take pictures on the actual structures so don't be grumpy if you find out upon visiting
  • Beautiful temple, the outside is amazing the Inside utterly astonishing. Completely free it’s a must for those who go to Kyoto. Is also possible to see the rope made of hair, that the Japanese woman crafted to help the rebuilding of the temple during one of the times that it was destroyed. Really beautiful, go go go!
