Sendaijo Ato, Sendai

3.5
Visit the historic site of Sendaijo Ato, an Edo-period structure destroyed in World War II. Demolished during the 1945 bombing of Sendai by the United States, only the ruins of moss-covered stone walls remain on site. Visit the castle museum to see a model of what the building used to look like, inspect a reconstructed guard tower, and admire relics from the castle’s past. From the hilltop on which it stands, the castle and its grounds offer panoramic views of Sendai. • I used to go sightseeing using the Rupuru bus, so I went sightseeing around honmaru ruins, but this time I used the subway, so I took a walk around the corner tower at the foot of the mountain. This is where the residence of the grand master of the Sendai clan was located, and it becomes the campus of Tohoku University when passing the corner tower. Only stone walls and corner towers can see what was going on at that time.

  • Speaking of Sendai sightseeing, i took a commemorative photo with date masamune statue. It overlooks Sendai City. I've been there several times, so I didn't go to the historical museum in this time, but I think people who have never seen Sendai Castle reproduction in CG should go.

  • Good views of Sendai. Easy 50 minute (approx) walk from Sendai or from International Centre subway station. Part of the walk is uphill that some will find strenuous. There is a Sendai Loople bus service that stops at the castle. The Castle ruins are really just the footprint of the castle. There are remains of castle wall gates, with information boards (in Japanese and English), that you pass walking to the castle location. There are food venues at the summit - didn't try them. Summit can be crisp and windy in winter (very chilly, with snow settled in various places in shadow).
  • I just really enjoyed the walk up! Very pretty temple at the top and the view is worth it alone.
