#7 of 71 in Parks in Kyoto
Take a tour of Shugakuin Imperial Villa, a set of three villas and associated gardens owned by the imperial family. Built between 1655 and 1659 by Emperor Gomizuno, the complex features three main buildings, all showcasing different aspects of traditional Japanese imperial architecture, including dark wood facades, sliding doors, elevated tatami mats, and painted wall panels. The sprawling park that surrounds boasts plentiful natural sights: waterfalls, woods, and ponds, as well as enclosed areas made into fine examples of traditional Japanese gardens. Though entry to the buildings is not allowed, many remain open so visitors can see inside as part of the tour. • The trip to Kyoto in the night 二日 this spring day eyes Katsura, 二日 eyes and the "school house" around. Comparison of my own writing. (Because it has the same content won't post on the shugakuin imperial. ) Is a world so the Katsura detached Palace in the plain, around the buildings are not completely independent. I'm probably not building Ordinance. For, between Kyoto and Mt. Hiei, shugakuin Imperial townscape in Kyoto and Mt. Hiei incorporates as the views over the city. It is a spatial reality that mean looks of course cars are running well and then stopped field in the premises for light trucks on the contrary too. Which is the better know personal preferences. Only the garden itself, both naturally and there are unspeakable, fall season would staff receives "Maple" in a large pond and imagine, let me give you a winner in the "school house". Access is free parking in the Katsura is "school house" near 100 yen parking 1 place only 'Katsura' side victory. I stopped the car to demachiyanagi, I went by train. Back and forth, it was no time in HP of the imperial household Agency was applying by postcard is now busy looking at quick. It is what had become a convenient so you can see results in a few days time. You should diligently checked because of cancellations. I also first Katsura was full of cancelled out, we could see. (In osakan capital alone had China series foursome, a white one thanks also to lines.... )

  • We took public transport there (bus #5, fare 230 yen exact change) and walk back to Westin Miyako hotel. It's the best garden we have seen in Japan. You need to have a reservation (appointment made on...  more »

  • My husband and I visited the property earlier this morning and I would highly recommend signing up if you're in the area. Be sure to sign up online a few days in advance as there is a specific selection process that takes a few days (and is not guaranteed). Our group was about 30 people in size and the tour was in Japanese but we received free headsets that gave us the necessary information in English. The grounds are beautiful and it was fun to imagine what the views and property would of looked like when emperors and princesses visited this area hundreds of years ago. Was a very nice way to spend the morning and the tour lasted about 80minutes. Mostly easy walking terrain with minimal uphill and well worth it overall!
  • The palace consists of three main areas that are connected with walking paths getting through the rustic view of rice paddies. From the top garden you can even see the great over view of entire Kyoto city. It's almost unbelievable you can enter and look around inside with a guided tour with a very knowledgeable guide although you have to book it well ahead - for peak season it sometimes fully booked months before. Audio guide available for non-Japanese speakers.
