Constructed in 1576, Maruoka Castle draws visitors to its tenshu, the oldest main keep in Japan. Destroyed by the Great Fukui Earthquake in 1948, the stronghold was later rebuilt using 80 percent of the original materials, including stone roof tiles, and pine and cedar wood. Climb the steep stairs to the top floor and enjoy the view from the watchtower. Apart from its historical importance, the castle's surrounding Yoshino cherry blossoms embody the spirit of Japan in spring. Maruoka Castle Reviews
more »It is one of the 12 existing castles that stand shoulder to the wall of Himeji Castle and Matsumoto Castle. It used to be a national treasure, but it was no longer a national treasure because of the collapse caused by the earthquake. It is not big, but rather a small castle, but it is a castle with a profound feeling that makes you feel old enough. The stairs are steep and it's hard to go up and down. I think that it is better to refrain from the skirt for the woman.
雪の水分... more »The stone wall that supports the castle tower makes the most of its shape without cutting the round stone of the field area into squares. It is completely different from the orderly stone walls found in Osaka Castle and Edo Castle. Many castles have white plastered walls, but here they have a unique design made of wood. In the Sengoku period, when kanana is not widespread, you can see the traces of roughly scraping logs. The point above all is that the castle tower is not the tile of the soil but the point where the shikotsu valley stone which tinged the blue of fukui specialty was used. It is knowledge that contains moisture of the snow and prevents the collapse of the castle tower. It is knowledge only of the snow country.
The castle was neat to visit, even if it was small and not easy to get to from most major cities. The great thing was how friendly and helpful the staff and local residents were, even though it was clear we were taxing their English (way better than our Japanese will ever be). We had to visit late on a bad weather day, but they were doing everything they could to make us feel welcome. Although it lacks some of the detailed historical and museum content and displays that other castles have (the original layout diorama was the highlight), it has all the original and authentic feel you should expect from visiting a piece of 450-year old history.
Old but very well preserved.
