Stop and take in The Site of Temiya Line, a narrow-gauge railway line once used to transport coal and marine goods, out of operation since 1985. Observe the remaining parts of the track, signals, and signage in this evocative location, which nowadays often serves for exhibitions and gatherings. Bring along your camera to capture the scene, but be aware that informational posts are in Japanese. To plan Otaru vacation without wasting time, ask Inspirock to design an itinerary.

It snowed so it was beautiful and not many tourists around so you can't see footsteps on the snow. You can have the whole place to yourself. Just need to spend 10 minutes to take in the whole scene. more »

This is a tricky walk. The boardwalk is slippery, so do take care. There are plenty of places to step off for coffee and cake or a meal along the way. There was a lot of construction when we went. There were no warnings of them and no detours around them. Suffice to say, there were a lot of confused tourits. South Korea is hard to negotiate unless you can speak Korean. They do not seem to know that they are a tourist destination.

Japan has a habit of destroying both it's valuable past and architecturally interesting buildings. Thankfully this area was too poor for redevelopment over the last 100 years and so a few buildings with character survive.
