Trip Planner:   Asia  /  Japan  /  Kansai  /  Osaka Prefecture  /  Osaka  /  Tsutenkaku
Tourists easily identify Tsutenkaku in the Osaka skyline, as the octagonal metal structure gleams by day and shines with colorful LED lights at night. The structure, completed in its current form in 1956, rises to an imposing 103 m (338 ft) and hosts a viewing platform at 91 m (298.5 ft). The LED lights, which illuminate the tower, change color every couple of months, usually to honor a particular season or event. Check out the advertisements from Hitachi, the structure's main sponsor since 1957, displayed with the tower's lights. • Speaking of Tsutenkaku, I remember being taken by my parents when I was in kindergarten. This time I walked right under Tsutenkaku. The illumination is beautiful, too. It was said that the second generation was completed in 1956. The memory was right.

  • On the middle of the three consecutive holidays in November, I lined up in a line to climb tsutenkaku, and there was a sign of "40 minutes waiting" at a short time to the ticket office and elevator. There was an elevator up to the second floor and an elevator from the second floor to the observatory, and the latter was waiting for 40 minutes. It was a pity that I waited to the ticket office, but I couldn't wait another 40 minutes, so I gave up. There were not a few people besides us who gave up on the display and went out of line. If you want to go up to the observatory, it seems to be good to choose free time or to have plenty of time.

  • The tower is in an interesting area that looks as if it has been frozen in the 60s/70s. Venture to the basement of the tower to explore a mind-blowing range of Japanese snacks. These include special Osaka editions and special editions where they scale up the snack! It’s quite fun to shop here. Only a few minutes walk from the subway, it’s worth a visit for a few hours.
  • It was so interesting that a line to the viewpoint is in the souvenir shop. You can choose a lot of souvenirs while waiting. The views from the top are quite good. A lot of different fun stuff inside
