Okayama Orient Museum was constructed on the occasion when 1,947 Middle Eastern works of art were presented by the Okayama Gakuen education foundation (by the late chief director, Mr. Shinjiro Yasuhara). This collection for which Mr.Yasuhara put his heart into, was formed under the guidance of honorary professor, Mr. Namio Egami, and the late Professor Shinji Fukai of Tokyo University, both acquaintances of Mr.Yasuhara. Therefore, the characteristics of the collection are systematically scholarly, and various fields of material which are indispensable to understanding the cultures of the Orient have been collected.

Since its opening this museum has made efforts to enrich the exhibition. Along with gifts and endowments from various sources, our efforts have enabled this museum to gradually secure a reputation for itself as a special museum of the Orient, an institution rarely found in other parts of Japan these days.

The characteristics of the museum and the center of activity focus on a standing exhibition of these collected artefacts. However, we take every opportunity to hold various special exhibitions in response to a wide-range of interests in culture and art. Also, we have broadened our activities to further a general understanding of history, art and culture not restricted to cultures of the Orient by holding a variety of accompanying undertakings including lectures.

As home to evidence the oldest human civilizations and as a symbol of cultural communication between East and West, the Orient will draw greater attention from now on and will provide important clues when we think of the future of Japanese culture. At our museum we hope to continue extensive activities based on the significance of this.

  • I visited because I was interested in Orient art. Because the exhibition method was not a style to let the person who does not know the Orient art understand the goodness of the exhibition, and to let it know, it was an atmosphere that it was good if the lover of orient art visited. If you are not interested in Orient art, I can't recommend it to you. According to the attributes of various exhibits, [Ancient Orient Museum (Toshima-ku, Tokyo) has decided the rules from this year and can be photographed (some are not eligible). Of course, we can't make a simple comparison.)

  • There was a gathering of relatives in Okayama, and there was no plan of sightseeing, so I went to kill time. It is full of oriental air, and it becomes study of the history. There was also a corner where you could wear colorful scarves and costumes freely, and there were not many visitors, so we enjoyed wearing them and taking pictures. There were some travelers sitting in chairs and relaxing, so it was a place to relax. Admission is also cheap.

  • Nice collection, though small. Not much English materials, but still informative, somehow.
  • Big Museum so you can watch but not slowly. What was 1,000 yen admission! I was having so much fun in person, there are plenty of interesting Antiquities-
