Ryuokyo Canyon, Nikko

4.3
#7 of 29 in Nature in Nikko
Immerse yourself in nature in Ryuokyo Canyon, home of a meandering emerald-green river resembling a dragon. Hovering steel span bridges and suspended waterfalls make this 3 km long (2 mi) trek one to remember, especially for nature lovers. Somewhat difficult to navigate to from Nikko, this ravine contains striking blue-green water beneath wisteria trees and unmatched views of the canyon from the bridges. This medium-intensity hike on a well-maintained trail requires good footwear, and you should watch out for steep and slippery steps on rainy days. • There is a large parking lot in front of the railway station. If you're in a hurry, go down the stairs from the back of the dining room and look at the Rainbow Falls. If you don't have confidence in your feet, walk to the right side of the river to the Sasabi Tea House and turn back. The basho is beautiful according to the time of year. There is also a restroom near The Sasabi Tea House. If you have confidence in your feet, it's a good time to cross the edge of The Rainbow Falls and take the left-hand promenade to The Musabi Tea House, and then return to ryuokyo station on the other side of the river. There is a little up and down, but the way back is an easy road without ups and downs.

  • It is a simple hiking course. Ryuokyo Station is the start goal. Once you go down to the riverside (climb on the way back), it's almost flat and easy to walk. I went there in the summer, so it was a little hot. I think that the time of the fresh green and autumn leaves is good.
