Chichu Art Museum, Naoshima-cho

A work of art its own right, Chichu Art Museum is built into the subtropical landscape of the southern side of Naoshima Island. Most of the gallery remains invisible from the outside, while a scattering of minimalist concrete structures peaking over the foliage provides only a hint of what lurks inside. Step in to discover a permanent exhibit of the famed water lilies by Claude Monet, as well as works by Walter De Maria and James Turrell. Take a break at the onsite cafe, which offers picturesque views of the Inland Sea. Start your trip to Naoshima-cho by creating a personalized itinerary on Inspirock.

  • This is a 5 stars architecture museum, to visit more for the Tadao Ando building than the art content. You need to appreciate slowly each space and its design, if not your visit will be done in 20mn.....  more »
  • Pleasant and easy ebike ride out from the main port village, lovely forest setting and feeling of isolation. A lot more subdued than Benesse House, you enter through a narrow anonymous entry portal...  more »

  • Wonderful place. The architecture is worth it alone. I think I enjoyed the space more so than some of the art. Highly recommended
  • Amazing museum, definitely a must visit when on Naoshima. Make sure to stop at their cafe, since they offer some nice beverages and dishes. Their terrace is particularly nice to enjoy the sunset.
