Nijo Castle, Nakagyo

4.3
#4 of 1,270 in Things to do in Kyoto
Originally built in 1603 and holding World Heritage Site status, Nijo Castle presents an exemplary look at Japanese feudal architecture. The castle served as a residence to the first Edo shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu, and the complex contains two concentric circles of moat and wall fortifications, surrounding the central palace and auxiliary buildings. Observe the sound you make as you walk through the corridors connecting various buildings on the "nightingale floors" designed to make noise and warn guards against intruders. Put Nijo Castle into our Kyoto road trip site and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • What a nice castle to visit. Very well maintained and beautiful. Huge grounds and a nice moat, filled with carp to feed. Colors were bright from renovations and had some areas with gold trim. No photo...  more »
  • Worth a look! The Hall was the scene of actors. We had seen on TV. Floor walk up, etc. You can actually walk the really profound.

  • The castle grounds was impressive; the high surrounding walls and moats were well crafted and withstood the passage of time in excellent condition. The castle is a beautiful building; you begin its tour by leaving your shoes at the entrance and securing your camera/phones. No photography allowed in building. You can read all the history and enjoy all the artworks(replicas of original). I was intrigued by the squeaky floors and the technology the used to achieve the sounds. It was a bit steamy in September but a tour is well worth your time.
  • One of my favorite attractions so far as you can actually walk inside the castle and really get a feel for how grand it is. There are guidebooks in English and explanations within the castle of the meanings behind the wall murals and architecture of the rooms. The outside garden is beautiful to walk through as well.
