Visit Okinawa Prefectural Museum and Art Museum to fully grasp the process of development of Okinawan art, culture, and folk life. Opened in 2007, the museum building, designed as a gusuku (castle), features a construction of local Okinawan limestone. A common lobby serves as entrance to both the art museum and history/natural history museum; you can purchase admission to one or the other, or both. Inspect reproductions of two traditional-style Okinawan buildings, learn about the geological origins of the Ryukyu archipelago, and examine numerous artifacts, works of art, and native musical instruments. Impassioned researchers can visit the extensive library to delve deeper into Okinawan history and heritage. Stunning design from the outside and when walk into the inner walk, you will see a beautiful traditional Okinawa house before entering the building. This is my favorite design cue of the museum. The history part of the museum is very well presented and quite enjoyable to walk. However, the art part of the museum is although interesting but doesn't feel particularly special. The 'Planned Exhibitions' changes for time to time, so it's hard to review but I'm sure they gotta be something special. The public park behind the museum (Shintoshin park) is also very nice and filled with lots of lively activities, especially in the weekend.
Interesting museum about Okinawa history and culture. It's a must visit if you want to understand more about Okinawa's past and the people living there. All exhibits are in English. Good to spend a few hours. They also have special art exhibitions that rotate continuously.
