After freedom of religion was introduced in 1871, the once-persecuted "Hidden Christians" of the area set about building the Neo-Romanesque structure of Urakami Cathedral, which was completed in 1925. The church's twin spires stood 64 m (209.9 ft) high and at the time it was considered the tallest cathedral in east Asia, until it was vaporized by the atomic bomb that was dropped only 500 m away in 1945. Rebuilt in 1959, the site still holds visible reminders of that senseless atrocity. You can see the original landing spot of the huge 50-ton belfry, partially buried in the ground, along with surviving statues of revered people who were exposed to the atomic blast. Look out for the impressive stained glass windows, which are attractively lit at night. Put Urakami Cathedral at the forefront of your travel plans using our Nagasaki trip itinerary builder website .

Urakami Cathedral Reviews
内部の写真撮影禁止だったと思いますが、ちょっとステンドグラスなど綺麗ですので、残念でした。 この辺私の勘違いであることを祈ります。 more »I think that it was a photography prohibition inside, but it was regrettable because the stained glass etc. were a little beautiful. I hope you're mistaken around here.
長崎の有名な観光地のひとつだけれども、普通に信者さんが通う教会です。先日は、市内の中学生がコーラスをしていました。大聖堂にひびく歌声はとても素敵でした。 more »It is one of nagasaki's most famous tourist destinations, but it is a church that believers usually attend. The other day, a junior high school student in the city was playing a chorus. The singing voice in the cathedral was very nice.
Immaculate Conception Cathedral also St. Mary's Cathedral, often known as Urakami Cathedral - Catholic church in the city of Nagasaki, Japan. Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Nagasaki. The modern cathedral is the second cathedral of the Nagasaki diocese. The first Catholic cathedral of Nagasaki was destroyed in 1945 during a nuclear bombardment. The modern Urakami Cathedral was built not far from the first destroyed temple and is a monument of bombardment.
A not so impressive place. It is interesting for travellers only because is a Catholic church in Japan. It has some history, but there is not much left of the original building as you may guess.
