Kumano Nachi Taisha, Nachikatsura-cho

4.4
#1 of 8 in Historic Sites in Higashimuro-gun
See the fusion of Buddhist and Shinto influences that separates the region from others at Kumano Nachi Taisha, a UNESCO-protected Shinto shrine occupying the same plot as a Buddhist temple. Located halfway up the mountain, the shrine stands at 350 m (1148 ft) above sea level, with its impressive backdrop featuring the tallest waterfall in the country. The shrine's architecture and spiritual importance combine with the scenery to give the area an atmosphere of reverence and calm. Part of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route, the shrine--along with others on the 1000-year-old pilgrimage route--has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. • The stunning view is the ancient red Pagoda with the fall, it is magnificent view. Walking up the hill to Kumano Nachi Taisa shrine is also well exercise. The falls has been one of the best highlight ...  more »
  • One of the three mountains of Kumano, Nachi Taisha, had several shrines built on a steep slope leading to the mountain. There was a parking lot in the direction of the shrine, but there was a sign when going up further, and there was a parking lot in front of the office where it went up the narrow road of the hurry. The view from here is wonderful. Nachi Falls flowed down beyond the building of Aogishi Toji Temple. There are many shrines, including the shrine, which are bright vermilion. The treasure of Nachi Taisha, which is said to be 1700 years old, was opened to the public at the treasure hall next to the shrine.

  • What a wonderful temple place!!! Absolutely worth every single step uphill, and the travel with local trains from Osaka to be compensated with a unique temple complex of the 3-legged-raven. Yes, GOT-fans ... a raven with 3 legs, not with 3 eyes :-) As in most places try to be here early. Even though the shrines and temples open up around 9:00, you will have chances to explore the complex and take some good photos for memories, without the risk of being photo-bombed.
  • Very very very beautiful place you must go in your trip. You will have to take a bus to get there. My advice is that if you want to walk kind of long way, you should get off the bus at the first stop on the hill. If you don’t want to walk get off at the second stop.
