Trip Planner: Asia / Japan / Chubu / Koshinetsu / Nagano Prefecture / Matsumoto / Kaichi Gakko Primary School
Learn about the Japanese education system at Kaichi Gakko Primary School, one of the country’s first schools. Inside the school-turned-museum, you can view various educational materials, stretching from the institution's establishment in 1873 until now. The museum is housed in a two-story Western-style building featuring elements of Japanese architecture. Its Western architectural influences come in the form of its second-floor balcony, decorated pillars, and its white plaster walls. The building’s central octagonal tower and carvings of dragons represent the Asian influence in the building’s design. About 70% of its construction costs were covered by donations from local townsfolk. Make Kaichi Gakko Primary School part of your personalized Matsumoto itinerary using our Matsumoto journey planner.
Kaichi Gakko Primary School Reviews
more »It's a wonderful building, and it's a great way to look out or walk inside. If you are interested in a variety of materials inside, i think you can enjoy it. However, there aren't many exhibits for children, so i don't think it's a place where children can enjoy it that much, even if it's a former elementary school.
more »The old Kaichi School was finally registered as a national treasure. I think that it is a place to visit matsumoto castle and the set. The shop in the building is particularly interesting, and there are items unique to the school, such as the original free book, blackboard eraser, and the key chain in the form of a land cell, so I think you can bring it as a souvenir for children with elementary school students.
Beautiful old school.
Had a great time there! To be fair, it built up with some fun interactions with locals, but the museum itself is quite interesting. In hindsight there wasn't really that much, still I managed to spend over an hour in that. Has a quite lovely feel to it.
