Shisendo Temple, Kyoto

4.3
#13 of 79 in Parks in Kyoto
Sit on tatami mat and experience masterworks of Japanese gardening at Shisendo Temple. The temple, established in 1641 by a key Japanese philosophers and landscape architect Ishikawa Jōzan, was created to highlight serenity and intimacy. Portraits of 36 Chinese poets decorate the main room. The temple's gardens boast camellias, water lilies, irises, rhododendron, hortensias, and mountain cherry. The garden features a soze, a water-powered bamboo device designed to scare large herbivores with its occasional clunking sound. Exquisite dry and stone landscape architecture earn these gardens a title of "poet's gardens." • Because it is far from the center of Kyoto, there are few people, and it is calm. It is a little negative to be away from the station of the Eizan train. If you want a place to settle down, you should go.

  • Such a peaceful place, worth the price of admission any season I'm sure. We stumbled across it on our way to another temple and were so happy to have found it. I only wish they had larger slippers for the garden.
  • Beautiful place to sit and be still, enjoyed the peaceful place and took some beautiful pictures.
