Sagano, Kyoto

4.1
The well established and otherworldly bamboo grove of Sagano conjures images of myth and legend, towering high above your head and splintering the sunlight. Along with the mesmerizing grove (also voted one of the 100 best soundscapes in the world), you'll find picturesque temple buildings to explore, reputedly aiding worshippers in fertility. Explore on foot, by bike, or by rickshaw, or step on board the celebrated scenic train ride--and don't forget your camera for the very photogenic atmosphere. The attraction can get busy, however, so consider arriving early to get a full experience. Find out how to plan Kyoto trip without stress by asking Inspirock to help create an itinerary.

  • Sagano bamboo forest attracts visitors with its surreal landscapes. Grove created monk Muso Soseki. Tree height reaches 40 meters. Bypass you can park for 15 minutes, but walking there feels like hours. Bamboo stalks emit special sounds. This incredible forest music.

  • I thought it would not be filling - I was totally wrong. The tofu was fantastic - firm to the touch but soft on the inside. It was sufficiently firm to allow a skillful manouvre of the chopsticks to pick them up, but soft such that any more force than the delicate balance will swiftly send the tofu into humble ruins. The meal was ¥3800 and it comes in a standard set so you don't have to worry about not knowing japenese. Sitting on a tatami mat, eating a hot pot of tofu with a selection of Japanese sides and tempura, this has got to be the best local experience around here!
  • Walkable from Arashiyama Park, this restaurant offers a nice break from all the crowds and a beautiful view of its private garden. There is only one set available, so the food was served quickly. Note it is not completely vegetarian as little fish are served as a side dish. We liked that even though it’s a lighter meal, it’s very filling. My favorite was the tofu pudding dessert.
