The Ryōzen Kannon is a war memorial commemorating the War dead of the Pacific War located in Eastern Kyoto. The concrete and steel statue of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara (Kannon) was built by Hirosuke Ishikawa and unveiled on 8 June 1955. The statue is 24 m (80 ft) high and weighs approximately 500 tons.
The shrine beneath the statue contains an image of Bodhisattva Ekādaśamukha and images of the god of wind and god of thunder. Memorial tablets of 2 million Japanese who died in World War II are also stored here. Four times a day services are conducted in their memory. Also on the site is a memorial hall in honour of the unknown soldier killed in World War II.

  • This temple, which is more of a peace memorial to the victims of World War II, is located in the bustling Gion district. Although it is on a tourist route, once past the reception there are significantly less people which is perfect to enjoy the tranquility of the place, under the gaze of Kannon (goddess of compassion, whose statue measures 24 meters).

  • This great buddah that sits alone on the edges of the mountain is imposing and interesting to discover Around you can observe the temple and several other places of prayer It's quite a small complex to visit It's curious and when you visit this part of kyoto it's on the way to the other temples so it's part of a continuity

  • Adult entrance fee at ¥300, huge statue of Guan Yin (Goddess of Mercy) to commemorate the fallen soldier during the war, you can also pay your respect to Buddha and Guan Yin here, very calm and serene environment.
  • Kannon = Avalokitsvara = Guan Yin = Goddess of Mercy.
