The Ryōzen Kannon is a war memorial commemorating the War dead of the Pacific War located in Eastern Kyoto. The concrete and steel statue of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara (Kannon) was built by Hirosuke Ishikawa and unveiled on 8 June 1955. The statue is 24 m (80 ft) high and weighs approximately 500 tons.
The shrine beneath the statue contains an image of Bodhisattva Ekādaśamukha and images of the god of wind and god of thunder. Memorial tablets of 2 million Japanese who died in World War II are also stored here. Four times a day services are conducted in their memory. Also on the site is a memorial hall in honour of the unknown soldier killed in World War II.

  • It was said that I wanted to go to the kannon of this place which I saw from Kyoto Tower to a guest from a foreign country, and went to the reception of the hotel. It was the last minute of closing time, but I wanted to come to the guest from abroad, so I told them that I had checked out the place, and if it was enough to take a picture, I could get it for free. We are very pleased to have guests and thank you for your flexible response.

  • For me this is the place I visited in Kyoto that had the most beautiful energy. This giant Buddha is spectacular but very soothing and "protective". It feels good when you go back into the courtyard. This place is much less touristy than many others and after the crowd bathing in some temples, it was very nice to be able to collect ourselves in peace.

  • Adult entrance fee at ¥300, huge statue of Guan Yin (Goddess of Mercy) to commemorate the fallen soldier during the war, you can also pay your respect to Buddha and Guan Yin here, very calm and serene environment.
  • Kannon = Avalokitsvara = Guan Yin = Goddess of Mercy.
