Mt. Kurama, Kyoto

#2 of 21 in Nature in Kyoto
Head up Mt. Kurama to find a place central to the region's natural and spiritual heritage. Topped with a famous temple and shrine, the forested hills are reputedly the home of Sojobo, King of the Tengu (Shinto gods and spirits who inhabit the forests and mountains). The hill has also become known as the birthplace of reiki: fans of the holistic practice flock here to witness the place where the founder of reiki, Mikao Usui, after 21 days of meditation, received the healing energy. It couldn't be easier to arrange your visit to Mt. Kurama and many more Kyoto attractions: make an itinerary online using Inspirock's Kyoto vacation tool.

  • The hike from Kurama to Kibune was easy and pleasant and took me about one hour. I went to Kyoto just for the hike, so I was not fully satisfied, but if the hike is just a part of your trip in Kyoto.....  more »
  • If you take the Eizan line to Kurama you'll be right on the doorstep of this mountain. You have 2 choices of getting to the top, the cable car or the mixture of trail and steps. Obviously the cable.....  more »

  • Lying on the outskirts of the city, this is a nice and easy trail away from the usual hustle of Kyoto. This route between Kurama and Kifune takes usually around 2.5 hour dotted with temples and spots with rich history. This trail does not offer a panoramic view but definitely a worthwhile dip in the forest greens.
  • Nice to get out of the hectic city of Kyoto and head of the forests. Not too far to go, hardly any people which is nice.. has a steep climb to get to the top and you can walk back down the other side to get to Kibune (a nice town and in the summer months they put decking over the river so you can eat on it!) The after effects of the typhoon is still very obvious at the moment, a lot of fallen down trees and destruction but the walk was still beautiful and a nice day out.
