  • Hieiyama is a temple, but needless to say, the largest biwa in Japan looks three-dimensional from the top of Mt. Hiei, and it is a place where you can see the shape of the tail of Lake Biwa which you often see on the map. On the west side, you can see the city of Kyoto.

  • This Unesco International Heritage-listed park is spread across the slopes of MT HIEI and consists of three distinct sites, TODO, SAITO and YOKAWA. The first is best known with his Konpon CHU-DO, a marvel of architecture, dedicated to the Buddha of Yakushi medicine. The second, SHAKA-DO, is home to the Shaka Hall and the oldest building in the preserved complex. And finally, the YOKAWA CHU-DO is several kilometers to the north and includes a building built on a hillside, it is the least popular obviously because it requires a greater physical effort to get close to it. An excursion that can be made during the day and by its configuration also allows the form of Kyoto circuit with the Eizan Electric Railway one goes to the terminus to the East, then we take the Cable bus and to reach the top of the cable car. After the various visits, you can continue the route by going down a path that will take you to the starting point of the Sakamoto cable car. The latter descends along the slopes of the mountain overlooking Lake Biwa and joins the small town of the same name where you can catch a bus to the station and return with the JR pass and thanks to the Kosei line back to Kyoto.

  • Just in case anyone is curious, this mountain and Kurama (the other line), are temporarily closed (for probably a month or two) due to typhoon damage. I tried to go up there but they told me the stops are closed near the tops of the mountains. Edit: The website for the train lines claim they will be fully open at the end of October. Beautiful place though.
  • No pictures will truly capture the beautiful views! Well worth it if you have 3 hours spare (up and down). Varied terrain, wear comfortable shoes. I found it harder than expected, constant uphill (no flat rests), but highly rewarding!
