Get an up-close look at Japanese macaques at Monkey Park Iwatayama, a forested area providing a home to a large troop of native primates. You'll be able to observe the monkeys from the safety of a caged viewing area, but be sure to follow posted instructions to avoid potentially dangerous encounters within unfenced spots. Great place to visit and see monkeys in an open space. The ¥500 entry fee is definitely worthwhile. There is a trek up the mountain side that takes about 30-40 minutes, but I think it adds to how memorable your experience will be. The monkeys can be found at the top and are literally everywhere, and not afraid to come close to humans and do their own thing. The staff are very welcoming and friendly, keeping an eye out for any trouble. There is a caged room (with you inside, and the monkeys outside) where you can feed the monkeys (-: highly recommended.
It's a decent walk up a hill, about 30 minutes, which wouldn't have been that bad if it wasn't 90 degrees. There are a couple places to stop on the way up and sit if you need to and 1 air conditioned room. Once you get to the top there is another room but not air conditioned where you can feed the monkeys. The monkeys are pretty chill just walking around. I didn't see them mess with any people, just with each other.
