Get an up-close look at Japanese macaques at Monkey Park Iwatayama, a forested area providing a home to a large troop of native primates. You'll be able to observe the monkeys from the safety of a caged viewing area, but be sure to follow posted instructions to avoid potentially dangerous encounters within unfenced spots. In addition to the monkeys, you'll find that the park features a sweeping view over the nearby city. Monkey Park Iwatayama Reviews
During our visit to Japan we had thought about going to see the famous ‘snow monkeys’ of Yudanaka but we were going when there would be no snow and a little research told us we’d be in the midst of... more »
We really enjoyed exploring the area around the monkey park and the hike up was quite pretty (good exercise, too!). It was so neat to watch the monkeys interact with each other and to be able to see..... more »
this experience was amazing!! be prepared for the hike - wear comfortable shoes and bring water! it's straight up a mountain for 20-30 minutes, but it's all relatively paved and easy enough if you go slow. The monkeys at the top of the mountain are AMAZING. They are so cute and comfortable around people. You can buy snacks in the store to feed to the monkeys from the viewing area. The view out to Kyoto is amazing as well. All the staff were very kind and polite. We could have stayed up at the viewing site for hours! Loved it.
Quite a hike both ways to get to the top. No monkeys on the way up or down, but lots at the top. There are informative signs on the trails and a little shop at the top. You can buy a bag of peanuts for 100Y and feed it to the monkeys through a mesh! The baby monkeys were very cute. It’s about a 20 min hike to the summit, and the summit closes at 4:30pm. I think they stop selling tickets at 4pm
