Kennin-ji Temple, Kyoto

4.6
Learn about the Zen branch of Japanese Buddhism at Kennin-ji Temple, which covers the religion's principles and history. Revered as one of the five most important Zen temples of Kyoto, the temple was founded in 1202 by the monk Yousai, whose remains lie buried on the grounds. Having survived many fires and restorations through the centuries, the current complex includes an abbot's quarters, dharma hall, tea house, and imperial messenger gate. Upon entry, notice the ceiling painting of two dragons, which commemorates the complex's 800th anniversary. Examine many remarkable artworks decorating the temple walls, and later head out to the choutei (the garden of the sound of the tide) to find some peace of mind. • It was the first temple we visited, by accident. It is magnificent, majestic in the interior decorations, in the garden... Recommended

  • Walking through the medieval quarter could not but look here and not see this not quite usual for Japan temple. It is more than eight centuries, although, of course, we see not the first edition, and the replica, and not the second and not the third - fires to wooden buildings do not feel ((In general, the temple of Kennin-ji is considered the first temple of zen Buddhism in the country and is revered as one of the five Kyoto's most important zen temples. Here, according to legend, is the tomb of the monk Yusay, who founded this temple. The temple complex includes the abbey itself, the Dharma hall, the tea house and the gates of the imperial messenger. It is recommended to pay special attention to the painting on the ceiling, de depicted two dragons. The reproduction is dedicated to the 800th anniversary of the complex. After getting acquainted with these wonderful works of art, go to the garden of stones to find peace of mind and find, again, peace of mind. The stone garden is wonderful!
