Honen-in, Kyoto

4.2
Explore the secluded woodland of Honen-in, a temple set in peaceful grounds. While the actual temple buildings open to the public only twice yearly (the first week in April, and the first week in November), you are always free to explore the calming surroundings, complete with raked gravel gardens and a tranquil carp pond. Be sure to check out the onsite gallery, which frequently exhibits national and international artists. Make Honen-in a centerpiece of your Kyoto vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Kyoto trip itinerary builder tool .

  • In May 2019, glass-sand water was established, following the thatched gate and white sand platform. Glass objects made of recycled glass are left with anti-slip and mouth screws on the bottom of the bottle. The famous temple and contemporary art, where Junichiro Tanizaki and Shuzo Kuki also sleep, are surprisingly compatible. It was a time when the fresh green shines, but the season of autumn leaves might be good, too.

  • This is one of Kyoto's hidden pleasures. It's a lovely quiet temple. You find it when you are walking the Path of Philosophy. If you want to escape the crowds, this temple is a nice one.  more »

  • Loved this park, I was the only person there when I went and it feels somewhah mystical.
